The Truth Behind the term 'Teacup' or 'Mini' Pomeranians
There is no such recognized breed as the teacup, miniature, mini, or any other name that implies that there is a separate and distinct dog breed, smaller than the standard Pomeranian.
There is only one Pomeranian dog breed in the USA and in many other countries all around the world. They are in the ‘Toy” group of the AKC Registry. The terms “Teacup”, "Pocket Pom", “miniature”, or “mini” in regards to Pomeranians, are considered marketing gimmicks to inflate the value of puppies. They may be used by some to describe a Pomeranian who falls on the low end of the accepted weight scale. What is not acceptable, is a breeder who purposely breeds to produce dogs who are a smaller size than nature intended.
All Pomeranian puppies are born small and can fit into a cup - they won't stay that way! Tiny Pomeranians are sometimes the 'runt' of the litter and are prone to having a shorter life span and certain health issues. Irresponsible breeders will go to great lengths to produce dogs who are smaller than nature intends and this is done by breeding two ‘runt’ dogs together, inbreeding, and / or other various unethical methods. This may produce a tiny Pomeranian, however will most likely have many serious health issues. Pomeranians under the breed standard often have underdeveloped organs, diabetes, thyroid problems and more.
Anyone who purchases or is the gift recipient of one of these Pomeranian puppies is giving a helping hand to unethical breeders.
Pomeranians are a serious victim of the puppy mill trade. To make sure that you obtain a healthy, well bred purebred Pomeranian, always put your trust in a reputable, honest Pomeranian Breeder ... doing that will insure that you do not fall into the trap of purchasing a dog that was bred down in size at the cost of the dog's health.
